Germany has significantly bolstered its military support for Ukraine, with the latest updates highlighting the delivery of critical equipment.

Leopard 1A5 Tanks

According to a recent announcement from the German government, the latest aid package includes 21,000 shells for Gepard self-propelled guns and eight valuable Leopard 1A5 tanks. This brings Germany’s total contribution of Leopard tanks to 58.

Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine is notable within Europe. The German newspaper Bild reports that Berlin has provided military assistance valued at €7.1 billion ($7.81 billion) in 2024 alone. This support has included highly sought-after Skynex air defense systems, Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and advanced Patriot missile systems.

2 More Armored Vehicles

The most recent update, as of July 29, includes not only the 21,000 Gepard shells but also two Bergepanzer 2 armored recovery vehicles equipped with spare parts, around 25,000 combat helmets, and a field hospital.

Additionally, the delivery of eight Leopard 1A5 tanks underscores Germany’s ongoing support, increasing the total number of Leopard 1A5 tanks sent to Ukraine to 58.

Although the Leopard 1 tanks date back to the 1960s, the A5 variant, which Germany is supplying, is a significantly upgraded model from the 1980s. These tanks feature advanced modifications such as the EMES 18 fire control system, thermal imaging for the gunner, and a ballistic computer, enhancing their effectiveness on the modern battlefield.

The 105mm rifled gun is adapted to fire modern APFSDS-T ammunition, capable of penetrating the armor of Soviet-era T-72 tanks.
