Deadly weapons frequently drop right into the middle of everyday civilian life. And when they do, the response from ordinary people can be remarkably simple.
A dangerous find
A video spreading across social media shows an elderly woman walking down a quiet country road. She wears a red jacket and a headscarf. Dry grass lines the cracked pavement.
Then she stops. A small quadcopter rests on the ground right in front of her.
She lifts the device without hesitation. Next, she pulls a cylindrical component from the top and holds the piece high in the air. The aircraft is completely disabled.
Beating the jammers
The device was a Russian first person view drone. According to Daily Express, it was likely waiting in a loitering mode to strike a target in the Zaporizhzhia region.
These specific aircraft use a thin fibre optic cable instead of a standard radio signal. The wire unspools as the device flies. This physical link stops enemy forces from jamming the connection.
Removing that spool immediately cuts the link to the operator. Former Ukrainian internal affairs adviser Anton Gerashchenko shared the clip online and was quick to praise the woman.
“This Ukrainian grandma picked up a Russian drone waiting for its target and took off the optic fibre spool from it, making the drone useless,” Gerashchenko wrote on X, according to the Daily Express. “I’m speechless. She’s amazing. God bless her.”
High risk reality
Cutting these wires has become a standard tactic on the front lines. Some Ukrainian soldiers even carry scissors specifically to sever the cables, the Daily Express reported.

Viewers of the video wondered if the woman had received local training on how to spot and disarm these new threats. People living near combat zones often have to learn basic survival skills involving military hardware.
The incident shows just how quickly cheap technology is changing modern conflict. It also proves that an advanced weapon can sometimes be defeated by a single person using bare hands.
