A video shared on social platforms appears to capture a guided bomb recovered on Russian soil.
OSINT researchers think this is the first known footage of the UMPB-5 model.
Observers say the device likely fell after a launch that did not go as planned and did not detonate.
Signs of failure
“It’s likely that it fell after a failed launch and didn’t explode. The wings are open, which indicates the glider module is working, but there may have been a control system failure,” explains Militarny.
The open wings in the footage suggest the bomb’s gliding unit deployed but guidance did not carry it to the intended target.
Until recently Russian guided bombs based on KAB kits reached roughly 60 to 70 kilometers from where they were released. Those weapons posed a threat mainly near the front line.
The UMPB-5 is described by analysts as an extended range modification with a reported reach of up to 200 kilometers. The warhead is estimated to weigh about 100 kilograms.
Recent strikes cited
In October 2025 Russia used this modified type to strike deeper into Ukraine, including strikes in Poltava Oblast and the city of Lozova in the southern Kharkiv region.
Lozova is noted as an important railway hub.
KAB variants are assembled from older unguided FAB bombs and UMPK conversion kits that add a seeker and foldable wings.
The kits are often compared to less advanced versions of other countries conversion systems.
Analysts warn that such gliding conversion kits are difficult to intercept once released.
The combination of increased range and a guided module makes them a different class of threat for targets far from the front.
