Words matter in global politics.
A swapped phrase can signal a massive shift in strategy or simply set a trap. Sometimes, the most shocking thing a leader can do is be polite.
A sudden change
Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed journalists at the end of the Victory Day celebrations. He caught everyone completely off guard.
The Unian news agency, cited by Onet, reported that the Russian leader used a surprising title. Putin referred to his counterpart simply as “Mr. Zelensky.”
That small phrase stunned audiences. It marked a massive departure from his usual aggressive language.
Erasing the old insults
During the early days of the invasion, the rhetoric coming from Moscow was vicious. When fierce resistance mounted, their leader lashed out in anger.
Onet News notes that the Russian leader previously urged Ukrainian soldiers to seize power. Back then, according to reports from Unian, he dismissed the civilian government completely and threw out brutal insults.
“It seems that it will be easier for us to reach an agreement with you than with this gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis who settled in Kyiv and took the entire Ukrainian nation hostage,” Unian recalls Putin saying.
The new polite trap
Now, the tone has shifted dramatically. While discussing potential talks, Putin offered a very different kind of statement.
“I have once again heard that the Ukrainian side, Mr. Zelensky, is ready for a personal meeting. Yes, I have. But this is not the first time we have heard this… We have never refused, and I have not refused either,” Putin said.
Military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko warned that this respect is completely fake. Speaking to Unian, he explained that the sudden shift is nothing more than a calculated political game.
“Suddenly, Putin started talking about his willingness to meet with Mr. Zelensky to sign a final peace treaty. This is another manipulation, but this time in a completely different tone,” Kovalenko said.
Anger at home
This polite approach has caused anger within Russian pro-war circles. Hardline supporters are struggling to understand why their leader is softening his public voice.
Russian military blogger Vladimir Romanov took to social media to mock the new language. He pointed out the jarring hypocrisy of the sudden change.
“Mr. Zelensky. So Zelensky is no longer a drug addict, usurper, and terrorist, but a gentleman?” the blogger asked rhetorically.
Moscow is clearly trying a new tactic. The world is watching to see what this strange politeness really hides.
