When threats become a daily routine, border nations look to their strongest allies for reassurance. Now, one Baltic country is finally getting the backup it desperately wanted.
Backup on the way
Lithuania is preparing to welcome American soldiers back to its military bases. Months of deep uncertainty hung over the Baltic nation after US troops went home during the summer.
According to the BBC and local media, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed that a fresh rotation of American forces is heading their way.
“I have just received confirmation that the new rotation of US troops is already on its way to Lithuania,” Nausėda announced on X.
He thanked the US administration and added that the American military presence acts as an indispensable part of collective defence.
Shoring up defences
The troops will settle into their posts by late October. Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas told the LRT broadcaster that two battalions are set to arrive.
He explained that this move will heavily support border defence and national security.
Kaunas also met with US defence official Elbridge Colby to push for a permanent American military base.
“This is a fresh new proposal, but considering the regional security situation and the cooperation between our countries, I think it is logical to consider such an idea,” Kaunas said.
A region on edge
Lithuanian leaders have made no secret of their anxiety. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius told the BBC that citizens feel constantly threatened by Russia.
He noted the government has even drafted civil evacuation plans. If attacked, he promised they are ready to fight back.
Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys pointed out that American forces are returning in large numbers. The US has typically stationed an armoured battalion of roughly 1,000 troops in the area.

Holding the line
This latest deployment sends a clear message. Because Lithuania shares borders with both Russia and Belarus, its security situation remains highly sensitive.
Neighbouring countries are also feeling the relief. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna confirmed the US will keep its military presence in his country too.
“This is a strong signal of Allied unity and important element of deterrence and defence on NATO’s eastern flank,” Tsahkna posted on X.
