Air combat remains a critical factor in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, as both sides vie for control of the skies.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, a highly advanced multirole fighter jet, has been a centerpiece of Ukraine’s effort to strengthen its air capabilities.

However, these aircraft face significant challenges in contested airspace.

Russian state news agency Tass reported that an American-made F-16 was shot down in the Zaporizhia region while preparing to launch a missile strike.

Used by 25 Nations

Vladimir Rogov, a member of Russia's Civic Chamber, claimed the plane was intercepted during its mission. Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed the report, and independent verification is still pending.

If true, this would mark the second alleged loss of an F-16 in Ukraine. The first occurred in August 2024, when Ukrainian pilot Oleksiy Mes died after his F-16 crashed.

Ukrainian military officials stated that Mes had destroyed three cruise missiles and a drone before the crash, which was not directly caused by an enemy missile strike.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, designed by General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin), is renowned for its versatility and performance.

It has been used by over 25 nations and boasts advanced avionics, supersonic speed, and exceptional maneuverability.

Equipped with precision-guided weapons, the F-16 is capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, making it a valuable asset for Ukraine.

Ukraine’s F-16 fleet remains limited as it awaits deliveries from Western allies.

Belgium and other NATO members have pledged F-16s to Ukraine, but delays have pushed the timeline for delivery to 2025, as recently reported by Belgian newspaper Le Soir.
