Relations between Russia and Estonia have long been shaped by geography, history, and unresolved mistrust.

As a former Soviet republic and a current NATO member, Estonia sits on a fault line between Moscow and the Western security alliance, where even small incidents can carry symbolic weight.

Since Estonia regained independence in 1991, its border with Russia has been a recurring source of friction. ‘

Agreements governing crossings and patrols were designed to prevent misunderstandings, especially as broader relations deteriorated following Russia’s war in Ukraine.

That fragile balance was tested this week.

Border incident unfolds

According to reporting by the Daily Express, three Russian border guards crossed into Estonian territory on Wednesday without authorization.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on December 17 near the Vasknarva breakwater on the Narva River in Ida Viru County.

Estonian border authorities detected the movement using surveillance equipment. The Russian guards were travelling on a hovercraft when they crossed the border.

The hovercraft stopped at a stone breakwater located at the entrance to Lake Peipus. The structure lies on territory shared by both Russia and Estonia, an area governed by long standing border arrangements.

Official response

Estonian officials said the crossing marked a breach of established procedures between the two countries. But they also said there was no immediate threat to national security.

The reason for the incursion has not been disclosed.
