Russian forces launched a fresh overnight drone attack on Kyiv just hours after a temporary ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia expired.
Explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital as air defenses responded to dozens of incoming drones.
Residential building struck
According to the Kyiv Independent, debris from intercepted drones hit a residential building in Kyiv’s Obolon district during the early hours of May 12.
Local officials said a fire broke out on the roof of the 16-storey building following the strike.
No casualties were immediately reported as emergency crews responded to the scene.
Damage spreads beyond Kyiv
Officials also reported damage in surrounding areas of Kyiv Oblast.
Regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said a kindergarten and several homes were damaged in the city of Fastiv during the overnight attack.
The full extent of the destruction was not immediately clear.
Ceasefire quickly unravels
The strikes came shortly after a temporary U.S.-brokered ceasefire expired following several days of relative calm.
During the pause in fighting, large-scale air attacks were reduced, though Ukraine still reported limited Russian drone launches and missile activity.
The latest attack signals a rapid return to intensified hostilities between the two sides.
Peace efforts remain uncertain
According to the Kyiv Independent, the United States is again attempting to push for a temporary ceasefire agreement between Moscow and Kyiv following months of stalled negotiations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine would avoid launching long-range strikes on Russian targets if Moscow refrains from carrying out mass attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Russia has continued launching regular drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure throughout the war.
Tensions remain high
The renewed attacks come amid growing uncertainty over whether diplomatic efforts can slow the conflict.
Kyiv residents were forced back into shelters overnight as air raid alerts sounded across the capital following the collapse of the ceasefire window.
