A Russian military helicopter crashed while attempting an emergency landing on a highway on Sakhalin Island. The aircraft reportedly lost power in both engines due to fuel exhaustion mid-flight. This incident highlights logistical challenges within the Russian armed forces.
Investigating the highway crash
According to United24 Media, the Mi-8 helicopter came down roughly five kilometers from its destination airfield. Video footage shows the aircraft descending toward the road with its rotor blades passing above a traveling truck. The helicopter eventually left the roadway and overturned in a roadside ditch.
A military aviation channel reported that the crew redirected the aircraft during the descent. As noted by United24 Media, the pilots took this action to avoid hitting civilian vehicles on the road. Images from the crash site show the helicopter lying on its side in the vegetation.

Russian authorities are currently investigating how the aircraft exhausted its fuel supply. According to United24 Media, the aviation channel noted that “there are many possibilities” regarding the circumstances of the incident. The Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the crash or potential crew injuries.
Facing fuel supply pressures
This crash occurs amid broader pressure on Russian aviation fuel supplies. As highlighted by United24 Media, Ukrainian forces have consistently targeted the country’s oil refining infrastructure. These strikes have reduced domestic aviation kerosene production across the nation.
The military has been forced to look abroad to cover these supply shortages. According to United24 Media, Ukrainian intelligence reported that Russia imported at least 70,000 tonnes of aviation fuel. The government secured these emergency supplies from trading partners in South Korea and Egypt.
The government is also implementing domestic restrictions to manage the remaining fuel reserves. As reported by United24 Media, Russia temporarily restricted exports of domestically produced aviation fuel. This export ban will reportedly remain in effect through the end of November.
Experiencing further aviation losses
Logistical failures are not the only challenges facing Russian military aviation. According to United24 Media, helicopters have also suffered losses resulting from friendly fire incidents. These operational errors further deplete the country’s available fleet of aircraft.
One such incident occurred in the Voronezh region earlier this July. As noted by United24 Media, a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter crashed after being struck by an air defense group. The mobile unit fired a missile while responding to a Ukrainian drone attack.
These compounding losses strain the operational capabilities of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The combination of fuel shortages and coordination failures presents ongoing challenges for military planners. Authorities must address these issues as the war continues to drain resources.
