Authorities describe the case as part of a broader campaign of sabotage linked to Russian intelligence.

The alleged plot involved targeted killings and deep infiltration, raising concerns about ongoing threats far behind the front lines.

Network exposed

According to Ukrinform, Ukraine’s National Police and Security Service (SSU) have dismantled a Russian-linked spy network operating in Kyiv and the surrounding region.

Officials said the group was preparing a series of contract killings targeting military personnel and volunteers.

The operation was reportedly coordinated by a handler connected to Russia’s military intelligence structures.

Assassination plans

Investigators said the group had identified potential victims among senior figures in Ukraine’s defense and volunteer sectors.

Targets included members of military intelligence, the National Guard and territorial defense units.

Authorities added that the suspects were detained while preparing to assassinate a commander of a volunteer unit in Kyiv.

How they operated

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the group used disguised vehicles equipped with flashing lights to avoid suspicion.

“They used vehicles equipped with flashing lights under the guise of security personnel to leave the crime scene unhindered,” prosecutors said.

Weapons and ammunition were reportedly stored in hidden caches in the Kyiv and Cherkasy regions.

Recruited agents

Officials said four individuals were recruited for the operation, including a law enforcement officer.

Among them was the head of a private security firm who provided transport, and a driver tasked with moving the alleged hitman to and from targets.

The suspected attacker had a prior conviction and was reportedly recruited by Russian operatives in 2022.

Wider plot

Authorities believe the group planned multiple assassinations, including the use of explosive devices placed under vehicles.

Charges filed

All suspects have been charged under multiple articles of Ukraine’s criminal code, including treason and attempted murder.

They face potential sentences ranging from 10 years in prison to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Additional suspects linked to the operation have been charged in absentia.
