The war in Ukraine has gone on for years. For many people in the West, it may feel distant.
But for Ukraine, it’s a daily fight to survive as a nation. That’s something Keith Kellogg, former national security advisor and special representative for Ukraine under Donald Trump, recently spoke about, according to Digi24.
Compared Zelensky to Lincoln
He shared his thoughts during a forum held by the German Marshall Fund in Brussels.
Kellogg said he tried to explain the seriousness of Ukraine’s struggle to Trump. He made a strong comparison between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Abraham Lincoln.

According to Kellogg, Lincoln and Zelensky both led their countries during wars that threatened their very existence.
Zelensky is fighting for the survival of his nation. On his own land. That’s what Lincoln did during the American Civil War. When you look at it that way, you begin to understand the level of danger they’re facing right now on the battlefield.
Kellogg believes that Americans sometimes fail to fully grasp the situation in Ukraine.
He thinks it’s because people in the US don’t imagine what it would be like to be in Ukraine’s place. Without that perspective, it’s hard to understand the pressure and urgency.
Open to Talks with Russia
He also said that the US should be open to talking about Russia’s concerns. In the past, Kellogg stated that some of Russia’s objections to NATO’s expansion should be taken seriously.
He even encouraged Ukraine not to completely give up on the idea of talks with Russia.
Kellogg’s comments come at a time when Ukraine’s war effort is still under strain.
Western support is vital, but public and political attention is starting to shift. His message was clear: the world should not forget what is at stake.
Ukraine is fighting a war it did not start. But how it ends will depend not only on the battlefield, but also on how the rest of the world chooses to respond.
