Trump’s Putin diesel deal derails peace talks as US envoys scrap Moscow trip

This diplomatic stall follows a busy autumn of shuttle diplomacy.

High-stakes diplomacy relies on careful timing and fragile trust.

When allies disagree behind closed doors, months of planning can vanish overnight.

Now, a sudden freeze in travel plans shows just how tense things have become in Washington.

Flights put on hold

American special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have canceled their upcoming trip to Russia. According to The New York Times and United24 Media, the pair suspended their travel plans to Moscow without setting a new date.

At the heart of the sudden freeze is a new fuel arrangement. U24 Media reported that a diesel deal between President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin has sparked a major clash between Washington and Kyiv. Relations between the two allies have now hit their lowest point since an Oval Office dispute last year.

Behind the scenes, tempers are flaring. One unnamed American official told The New York Times that Trump responded with fierce anger toward Ukraine, making his next moves hard to predict. According to the reports, Witkoff and Kushner will stay home until Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “improves relations with Trump.”

Six years vs six months

This diplomatic stall follows a busy autumn of shuttle diplomacy. Back in September 2026, Witkoff and Kushner sat down with Putin in Moscow for three hours, United24 Media reported. They left without a deal because the Russian leader refused to back down from his goal of taking the entire Donetsk region.

Moscow and western analysts view the battlefield very differently. According to Bloomberg, Putin felt confident his troops could seize the whole territory within half a year. However, researchers at the Institute for the Study of War calculated that at Russia’s current pace, taking the area would actually take until October 2032.

Before those September talks even started, CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a quiet, unannounced trip to the Russian capital. U24 Media noted that Ratcliffe handed Russian intelligence chiefs a bleak report on their country’s struggling economy and heavy battlefield losses.

Later, Witkoff flew to Kyiv to speak with Zelenskyy and European national security advisers. He came away from those meetings reporting “substantial progress” in the talks, according to U24 Media. Now, all of that momentum is sitting on ice.
