US special envoy Steve Witkoff described Vladimir Putin as a humanist during recent diplomatic negotiations in St. Petersburg.

American special envoy Steve Witkoff recently praised Russian President Vladimir Putin while seeking support for renewed peace negotiations. According to the Kyiv Post, this diplomatic engagement occurred even as Russian military forces continued launching deadly attacks against civilians. The American representative met directly with the Russian leader in St. Petersburg to present several diplomatic proposals.

Witkoff utilized the meeting to thank the Russian president for recently releasing American teacher Stephen Hubbard. The Washington administration had previously considered this American citizen to be wrongfully detained by Russian authorities. During the diplomatic exchange, Witkoff stated, “You often describe President Trump as a humanist. But you are a humanist too, sir.”

This diplomatic praise sharply contradicted recent assessments published by international human rights monitors operating in the region. The United Nations monitoring mission documented escalating civilian suffering resulting directly from intensifying Russian military operations. The international organization recently reported that the preceding weeks were among the deadliest for Ukrainian civilians in years.

Diplomatic discussions and peace frameworks

The envoy brought official documents outlining possible diplomatic approaches designed to secure a lasting peace settlement. He actively requested the Russian leader to consider resuming comprehensive negotiations involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. He further suggested that representatives from technical working groups could potentially participate in these diplomatic discussions.

The American representative maintained that a viable basis exists for moving toward an immediate military ceasefire. He promised to brief the Russian leadership comprehensively regarding recent diplomatic discussions held previously in Oslo. He also requested permission to include Jared Kushner, a participant in the diplomatic effort, via telephone during the meeting.

Witkoff actively urged Putin to discuss potential next steps toward initiating three-way negotiations between the relevant nations. He pressed for these preliminary discussions even if no formal decisions could be reached during the Wednesday meeting. The envoy arrived in Russia directly from Norway after completing a diplomatic meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Lingering tensions and military realities

The Ukrainian president confirmed that intelligence sharing with the American government resumed following their meeting in Norway. Zelensky stated that the two nations successfully agreed on several peace proposals including future security guarantees. However, President Donald Trump simultaneously claimed that Washington and Europe had already spent a massive fortune supporting Kyiv.

The American leader demanded that the Ukrainian government must actually want to make a diplomatic deal. Trump defended his recent moves to ease pressure on Moscow by citing diesel fuel returns to the United States. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly rejected international claims suggesting they are obstructing ongoing peace efforts.

The military situation remains dire despite these renewed international attempts to negotiate a lasting ceasefire agreement. United Nations monitors verified that attacks killed at least 328 civilians across Ukraine during the month of September. The monitoring mission confirmed that military strikes continued targeting critical electricity and heating infrastructure as winter rapidly approaches.
