The complaints at home only grew louder when the tournament finally ended.
Sporting events often serve as massive sources of national pride, especially in countries with a long history of total athletic dominance.
But when political connections appear to matter more than pure talent, a bad day on the floor can quickly turn into a bitter public scandal.
A controversial lineup
A fierce debate is tearing through Russian society following the recent European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. The event recently wrapped up in Varna, Bulgaria.
Domestic anger erupted over how officials selected the national team. Fans quickly noticed that most of the competing athletes came directly from the Heavenly Grace sports school.
That specific academy was founded by Alina Kabaeva. According to a report from Dialog cited by La.lv, Kabaeva is widely recognized as the romantic partner or common-law wife of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Falling down the ranks
The complaints at home only grew louder when the tournament finally ended. Despite being heavy favorites, the Russian squad managed to secure just two gold medals overall.
This result marks a massive drop for a country that usually crushes the competition on the mat. Back in 2021, before sweeping international disqualifications took effect, Russian gymnasts took home nine golds at the same championships.
This year was completely different. The once dominant squad finished a dismal fourth in the gold medal tally, falling far behind the national teams from Bulgaria, Germany, and Spain.
A previous warning
Only two athletes found true success. Sofia Ilteryakova won the single adult gold medal for the Russian side, while Yana Zaikina secured the second top prize in the junior division.
Ilteryakova already had a highly controversial reputation before arriving in Bulgaria. Earlier this year at a World Cup event, she flatly refused to face the flags while the Ukrainian anthem played for the winner, Taisiya Onofriychuk.
The International Gymnastics Federation officially warned the Russian athlete for her behavior during that tense medal ceremony.
Claiming a win
State media broadcasters worked hard to spin the event. Despite the obvious drop in athletic performance, propagandists presented the fourth-place finish as a massive success for the nation.
Kabaeva stepped up to defend her students. She insisted that Russian artistic gymnastics “is still one of the strongest in the world and continues to develop.”
However, the bitter reactions online suggest that everyday sports fans are completely rejecting the official government story.
