Coca-Cola contains high levels of sugar, with a single can exceeding the daily recommended intake.

Coca-Cola shows up everywhere, from summer BBQs to Christmas celebrations, famous for its happy ads and classic look.

But, lots of health experts worry because Coke has a lot of sugar.

How Much Sugar is in Coke?

A regular 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola has 39 grams of sugar, and Cherry Coke has even more with 42 grams. This might not seem like much, but it's a big deal since it's most of what's in Coke.

The American Heart Association says women should have no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar a day and men 9 teaspoons.

One can of Coke can use up all that sugar allowance or even go over it.

Is Diet Coke Any Better?

Some people switch to Diet Coke thinking it's healthier.

But research, like a 2018 study, shows that diet sodas might not help lower the chance of getting diabetes, so they might not be the better choice we thought they were.

Rethinking Your Drinking

With 39 grams of sugar, drinking a can of Coca-Cola goes beyond what's healthy.

It doesn't mean you have to stop drinking soda forever, but maybe think of it more like a special snack. There are lots of other drinks with less sugar that can make your celebrations just as fun.
