The Kremlin strongly doubts the weapons will actually leave Japan.
When large-scale military exercises conclude, the host nation usually expects the visiting forces to pack up their gear and head home.
Sometimes, however, the heavy weaponry stays behind, creating deep friction between neighbouring countries.
That is exactly the geopolitical tension currently building in the Pacific.
Lingering weapons
Russian officials have voiced serious doubts about the official timeline for removing American military hardware from Japanese soil. The diplomatic dispute currently centers on advanced missile batteries positioned on the island of Kyushu. Moscow believes the equipment might become a permanent fixture.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko shared his growing skepticism during a recent media appearance. He told the Izvestia daily that the Kremlin strongly doubts the weapons will actually leave Japan when the current training window officially closes.
“The Japanese authorities promised us that they [the missiles] will supposedly be removed after the military exercises are over,” Rudenko said, according to TASS.
A clear warning
The senior diplomat made it absolutely clear that Moscow views the situation with deep suspicion. He noted that the Russian government remains highly critical of the current leadership operating in Tokyo, leaving little room for compromise.
“Unfortunately, we have little trust in the current authorities. This is why we have warned that such things will not go unanswered,” the Russian diplomat added.
Earlier this year, the United States military moved its Typhon ground-based systems to the southwestern Japanese island for joint maneuvers scheduled to run between June and September. These advanced platforms are specifically designed to launch intermediate and shorter-range missiles across vast distances.
Escalating regional friction
The ongoing military drills also feature another layer of heavy firepower. American forces have deployed HIMARS multiple rocket launchers alongside the Typhon batteries to support the summer training exercises.
This combined military build-up has triggered a fierce and sustained diplomatic response from the Kremlin. Russian government officials have repeatedly demanded that the weapons systems be withdrawn from the territory entirely once the drills conclude.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova recently weighed in on the escalating dispute. She firmly stated that the joint drills involving the Typhon deployments actively threaten Russia’s national interests and overall security in the region.
