Independent analysts utilizing satellite imagery discovered that Russia is replenishing equipment at storage bases near NATO borders.

The Russian military is replenishing equipment at storage bases near NATO borders. According to the Kyiv Post, analysts discovered these movements by examining commercial satellite imagery. The news outlet iStories initially reported on this hardware accumulation on October 17.

The 22nd Central Reserve Base currently stores T-90M tanks and armored personnel carriers. This facility is located approximately 310 miles from the borders of Estonia and Latvia. Analysts observed equipment arriving at this location between the fall of 2025 and October 2026.

Researchers emphasize that the arriving equipment remains confined to storage facilities. The vehicles have not been transferred to units participating in combat operations. The report clarified that this machinery is not prepared for immediate deployment.

Equipment deliveries and tactical adaptations

The buildup is also visible at bases located farther from western borders. Analysts identified 78 refurbished T-72B3 tanks arriving at the 349th Central Tank Storage Base in the Altai Krai region. This inland facility has also received more than 100 BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles since June 2026.

Similar activities are occurring at the 374th Mobilization Deployment Support Center in the Karelia region. This facility sits approximately 115 miles away from the border with Finland. The regional base has received Malva artillery systems and self-propelled guns since 2025.

Russian forces previously utilized a large share of their stored armored vehicles during the invasion of Ukraine. Military commanders now rely more on infantry groups because drones threaten tanks. Meanwhile, factories continue manufacturing equipment and repairing damaged combat vehicles.

Strategic implications and regional security

Researchers noted that the equipment visible in the images includes both manufactured and refurbished vehicles. The accumulation does not prove that Russia is preparing to attack a NATO country. Russian officials continue to deny possessing plans regarding neighboring member states.

Journalists from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia reported on similar developments in June. These reporters discovered that Russia was building and modernizing facilities near northern NATO countries. The latest satellite imagery provides evidence that storage bases are receiving equipment.

Analysts suggested these vehicles could be useful during a future confrontation with the alliance. They noted that NATO militaries lack the scale of drone experience observed in Ukraine. Ultimately, the evidence leaves open the question of how this equipment might be used.
