Just days ago, a senior diplomat in Sweden was arrested on suspicion of espionage. Now, he has been found dead, reports Mirror.

The story has shocked many inside the country and raised new questions about what really happened behind the scenes.

Espionage Allegations Lead to Arrest

The man, who had worked in several embassies around the world, was arrested last Sunday after police raided his home.

Reports say he was suspected of leaking sensitive information. He was later released but went straight to a hospital after his release.

His lawyer, Anton Strand, says the diplomat filed a police complaint, accusing officers of assault and misconduct during the arrest.

By Thursday, the man was dead. Officials confirmed the news but shared very few details.

Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, said she was informed of the death.

“My thoughts are with the employee’s family, friends, and colleagues,” she told the newspaper Aftonbladet.

Sweden’s Foreign Ministry also released a short statement confirming the death. They said they would not share more out of respect for the family.

Security Service Keeps Quiet

The country’s security service, Säpo, declined to confirm or deny much. A spokesperson said they could not comment on the case and pointed to a gag order on the investigation.

They wouldn’t say anything about the cause of death or the ongoing inquiry.

Swedish broadcaster SVT reported the arrest may be connected to a recent scandal involving leaked images.

Those images caused the downfall of Sweden’s newly appointed national security advisor, Tobias Thyberg, earlier this month.

The pictures were said to have been posted on a dating website.

The diplomat’s lawyer insists his client did nothing wrong. “He denied any criminal activity,” Strand said.

Family Wants Investigation Continued

He added that the man’s family wants the investigation to continue. They especially want police to look into how he was treated during and after the arrest.

So far, no further information has been made public. What exactly happened between the arrest and the diplomat’s death is still unclear. The case remains open.
