High-tech car thefts are becoming faster and more sophisticated as criminals increasingly rely on electronic tools instead of traditional break-in methods.

According to BGR, some organized theft crews are now able to steal vehicles in less than a minute without keys or broken windows.

How it works

Authorities say thieves are using diagnostic tools that connect directly to a vehicle’s onboard computer system.

The devices can reportedly program blank key fobs and give criminals instant access to targeted cars.

The method avoids older techniques such as hot wiring or smashing windows.

Instead, thieves plug into a vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port, commonly used by mechanics and dealerships.

Real tools

One of the brands mentioned in the investigation was Autel, a company known for producing automotive diagnostic scanners.

These tools are widely used for repairs, troubleshooting and key programming by professionals.

Some advanced devices can communicate directly with vehicle security systems and create replacement keys.

Investigators say criminals are now repurposing that legitimate technology for theft operations.

Multi-state theft ring

The details emerged after federal prosecutors announced indictments linked to a vehicle theft operation spanning several U.S. states.

Authorities said the group targeted vehicles in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

According to investigators, the stolen cars included sports cars like Corvettes and Camaros alongside more common models such as Honda Civics.

Officials allege many vehicles were later shipped overseas and sold on international black markets.

Hard to stop

Security experts say defending against this type of theft can be difficult once criminals gain direct access to the diagnostic port.

Traditional anti-theft tricks used against relay attacks may not stop this method.

Some owners are now turning to hidden GPS trackers or Apple AirTags to help recover stolen vehicles afterward.

Several police departments have even distributed tracking devices to residents as theft rates continue rising.

EV difference

Some electric vehicles may be less vulnerable because they do not always use traditional OBD-II systems.

EVs often rely on different diagnostic architectures and additional security protections.

However, experts warn that as vehicle technology evolves, thieves are also adapting quickly.

The growing use of electronic tools highlights how modern car theft is increasingly shifting from physical break-ins to digital attacks.
