A troubling discovery
During a routine sweep in the northern Chernihiv region, investigators encountered an unusual hazard on the ground.
Ukraine’s Security Service, known as the SBU, recently inspected the wreckage of a downed Russian Geran-2 strike drone.
The team immediately noticed something strange about the debris near the village of Kamka.
Attached to the modified drone were fragments of an air-to-air missile, a weapon usually fired from jets rather than carried by unmanned aircraft.
Military analysts believe Russian forces are adapting these drones to target Ukrainian helicopters and aircraft. By turning standard strike drones into flying anti-air traps, they hope to deter pilots who try to shoot down incoming waves.
Spiking radiation levels
The real surprise came when emergency teams began scanning the crash site for environmental hazards.
Monitors registered gamma radiation levels reaching 12 microsieverts per hour, a figure that sits well above natural background levels.
Experts quickly realized the danger came directly from the missile warhead. Further testing showed the weapon contained depleted uranium, specifically tracking elements of Uranium-235 and Uranium-238.
This specific model, identified as an R-60M missile, swaps out traditional tungsten components for dense uranium rods.
The SBU noted that these specialized warheads can usually be identified by specific hazard markings painted directly onto the metal casing.
Protecting local communities
Emergency crews and military personnel worked together to neutralize the threat safely. They quickly secured the damaged warhead and moved the radioactive components to a secure storage facility.
Officials are now warning local residents to avoid all military debris, since burned ammunition poses a unique threat.
Damaged casings can release toxic radioactive dust that endangers both human health and the local environment.
This incident follows earlier concerns about radiation safety in the country.
Last year, a drone strike damaged the protective shelter over the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, keeping officials on high alert.
