Putin targets old ally with bizarre new ban

The move comes shortly after a new trade route was proposed by Donald Trump.

Russia has suddenly clamped down on everyday shipments from its traditional ally.

On Wednesday, the country’s state agricultural watchdog announced a temporary block on all flower imports coming from or passing through Armenia.

The Moscow Times cites the agency, known as Rosselkhoznadzor, for claiming the restrictions protect local plant safety. Officials flagged 135 shipments out of more than 96 million imports for requiring quarantine measures. But they did not offer further details.

The new rule took effect on Thursday. Trade will remain frozen until Russian inspectors can finish visiting Armenian greenhouse facilities.

Deep political chill

This unexpected economic freeze hits a major industry. According to the Kommersant newspaper, Armenia currently provides about ten percent of Russia’s cut tulips, and its roses sell for far less than competing imports.

But the real source of the dispute looks like politics rather than plants. The flower block arrived just weeks before critical parliamentary elections take place in Armenia on June 7.

Relations between the two official allies have gone downhill since 2023. Armenia openly blamed Moscow and its peacekeepers for failing to stop an offensive by neighboring Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Snaps and bans

The tension has played out in public arguments. During recent talks with President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took a jab at Russian censorship by noting that Armenia maintains “100% free social media”.

Moscow reacted with swift economic retaliation. Authorities quickly shut down a factory that imports Armenian cognac and blocked more than one million bottles of mineral water.

The pressure continues to mount. Putin recently warned it would be “impossible by definition” for Armenia to stay in its regional economic bloc if it joins the European Union. Russia also scolded Armenia for hosting Ukraine’s leader at a recent summit.

The Trump route

Behind the scenes, a surprising new economic lifeline for Armenia has emerged from across the Atlantic.

Donald Trump proposed a 43-kilometer transport corridor cutting right through southern Armenia. The European Union already backs the plan.

The path would connect Central Asia directly to Europe while bypassing both Russia and Georgia. It could completely change regional trade.

According to an analysis by Senior Foreign Correspondent for The Telegraph, Adrian Blomfield, this move has turned the nation into a major geopolitical battleground, drawing intense interest from Washington and Europe.
