Scientists warn that humanity may already be overlooking signs of extraterrestrial life due to limitations in current research methods and technology.
For many years, humanity has been searching for biological traces in space, yet several researchers still claim that there is a possibility we may never find evidence of life, Wirtualna Polska reports.
According to astrobiologists, the development of instruments and research methods could be crucial to the discovery of new life.
There is therefore a strong possibility that we are limited in our capabilities and are consequently overlooking crucial signals that are actually present.
Blind spots
Previously, the major concern among astrobiology researchers was false positive results indicating signs of life. Today, concern is growing over the opposite issue.
Inge Loesten Kate, a professor at Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam, believes that research is not focusing enough on false negative results:
“We should pay attention to such false negative results. This shows that we lack the ability to recognize the existence of life,” the professor says.
The traces may be difficult for researchers to detect because they have either degraded, are hidden beneath the surface, or do not match the biological patterns researchers normally look for, Wirtualna Polska reports.
Mars sparks debate
The discussion has become particularly relevant following the discovery of iron-rich minerals on Mars. The minerals display certain oxidation patterns that often point to biological activity.
However, researchers emphasize that this is not yet proof of life and that more advanced analyses will therefore be needed moving forward, Wirtualna Polska reports.
Researchers’ concerns are growing especially as several space missions to Mars are planned in the coming years.
These include Japan’s MMX mission to Mars’ moon Phobos and future sample-return missions, Space.com reports.
