The prolonged fighting around the small Ukrainian settlement of Mala Tokmachka has become a striking example of Russia’s slowing battlefield momentum in southern Ukraine.

Military analysts and pro-war Russian commentators increasingly point to the battle as evidence of how difficult and costly Moscow’s offensive operations have become more than four years into the war, reports Onet Wiadomości.

Offensive losing speed

Located near the strategic Ukrainian stronghold of Orikhiv in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Mala Tokmachka has remained under near-constant pressure since the early months of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Russian forces first claimed control of the village in 2022, but Ukrainian troops later regained positions in the area. Since then, repeated Russian offensives have failed to secure a decisive breakthrough.

According to Onet Wiadomości, the village has appeared continuously in Russian military updates for more than a year as troops attempt to push through heavily fortified Ukrainian defenses.

Independent battlefield monitoring projects, including DeepState and Lost Armor, continue to show contested positions around the settlement rather than stable Russian control.

Costly pressure campaign

The battle reflects broader problems facing Russian forces across the front line.

The US-based Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian territorial gains have slowed significantly in recent months as Ukraine intensifies strikes on logistics, communications and supply infrastructure.

Analysts say Moscow continues launching grinding infantry assaults despite increasingly limited operational progress.

Russian military bloggers have also begun openly questioning official narratives describing advances as major victories while fighting drags on around small settlements with little strategic value on their own.

Symbolic setback

The repeated announcements surrounding Mala Tokmachka have gradually turned into an embarrassment for some pro-war Russian commentators, who argue the Kremlin’s messaging no longer matches battlefield realities.

Russian Telegram channels supporting the war have criticized what they describe as exaggerated reporting about tactical progress in Zaporizhzhia.

Observers note that the battle’s symbolic importance now outweighs the military value of the settlement itself.

For Ukraine, holding positions near Orikhiv continues to block Russian attempts to deepen advances toward other parts of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

War of attrition

Military experts increasingly describe the fighting in southern Ukraine as a war of exhaustion rather than maneuver.

Both sides continue deploying drones, artillery and small assault groups while front lines move only marginally over extended periods.

The ongoing struggle around Mala Tokmachka illustrates how the war has shifted far from Russia’s early expectations of rapid territorial gains and toward a prolonged campaign defined by attrition, defensive fortifications and mounting battlefield fatigue.
