The POTUS has allegedly had enough with NATO, and is planning a serious attack.
European NATO members are scrambling to reassess alliance defence planning after the Trump administration reportedly warned allies that the United States intends to sharply reduce its military contribution to NATO operations.
Message was delivered during a closed-door NATO meeting on Friday, according to German outlet Der Spiegel, which cited details from participants familiar with the discussions.
Officials from the Pentagon allegedly informed alliance members that Washington expects European countries to rapidly prepare alternatives capable of filling the gaps left by a reduced American presence.
US Expected to Scale Back Key Military Assets
Planned reductions reportedly involve some of the United States’ most strategically important military resources inside NATO structures.
Der Spiegel reported that fewer American fighter jets, warships, drones, refuelling aircraft and long-range bombers will be made available to the alliance going forward.
US officials are also expected to reduce fighter aircraft contributions by roughly one-third, while American submarines could reportedly be removed entirely from NATO operational structures.
Several European officials reportedly entered the talks expecting a slower and more gradual restructuring of US commitments.
American demands instead appear to be broader and more immediate than anticipated.
Pressure Mounts Ahead of Ankara Summit
Central concern involves NATO’s so-called “Force Model,” designed to mobilise more than 300,000 troops at high readiness during military crises or war.
Washington is reportedly preparing to contribute significantly fewer troops and less equipment to that structure in the future.
European governments have now been given only weeks to present proposals showing how they intend to compensate for the expected reductions before alliance leaders gather for a summit in Ankara in June.
Der Spiegel described Friday’s meeting as “a turning point for NATO.”
Growing uncertainty surrounding long-term US commitments has intensified debate across Europe over defence spending, military readiness and strategic dependence on Washington as security concerns continue to rise across the continent.
