Putin embarrassed as expensive ‘miracle’ weapon only manages to destroy empty garages

The Russian leader publicly claims the advanced weapon is “uninterceptable.”

Military commanders often rely on highly touted technological marvels to secure an easy battlefield victory.

But sometimes, massive financial investments result in completely underwhelming physical destruction.

Reality rarely matches the glossy propaganda.

A massive failure

Russian forces recently launched a colossal hypersonic ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar training ground. The weapon sped toward the Ukrainian town of Bila Tserkva.

Despite its terrifying reputation, the highly advanced Oreshnik missile ultimately struck a mundane local parking garage. Ukrainian authorities confirmed the strike completely destroyed several small sheds without causing any reported fatalities on the ground.

Analysts estimate the overall production costs for a single launch amount to tens of millions, according to Die Welt cited by Onet. That astronomical price tag makes the destruction of a few empty garages a massive military embarrassment for Vladimir Putin.

Physics and flaws

The enormous forty ton weapon relies on a solid fuel engine to hit speeds exceeding Mach 10. That terrifying velocity creates a burning plasma layer around the missile during reentry.

This extreme heat completely blocks vital radio and satellite signals from reaching the internal guidance computers. As a result, operators cannot make real time course corrections to accurately strike precise military targets.

Die Welt notes the weapon is essentially a modified version of the nuclear armed RS-26 Rubezh missile. Without a nuclear payload, its conventional explosive power remains severely limited by a blatant lack of targeting precision.

Defense challenges

Even with its obvious accuracy flaws, the incredibly fast missile remains exceptionally difficult to shoot down. The Russian leader publicly claims the advanced weapon is “uninterceptable.”

Standard air defense systems like the German Iris-T cannot handle ballistic targets traveling at such extreme velocities. Even advanced Patriot batteries struggle because the incoming projectile flies much higher and faster than older models.

To combat the ongoing threat, Ukrainian military forces are utilizing explosive drones to directly attack Russian launch sites on the ground. Western allies are also rushing to develop and deploy advanced interceptors like the Arrow 3 system.

The recent strike highlights a complicated reality for regional security forces. The original article notes, “The attack on Bila Tserkva demonstrates one thing above all: the Oreshnik is neither the unstoppable wonder weapon Moscow portrays it to be, nor an easily contained threat. It brutally shortens defenders’ reaction times and forces even the most modern air defenses to overreach their limits.”
