Wedding days are often filled with last-minute adjustments and family complications.
While a bride walking down the aisle usually follows a predictable script, sometimes an unexpected change of plans reveals exactly who she is, reports The Express.
Stepping in
The royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was a global event. Behind the closed doors of the palace, the final preparations were complicated by logistical challenges and reported disagreements among the family.
Less than a week before the ceremony, Thomas Markle confirmed he would not be attending. This meant the bride was left without a family member to escort her to the altar.
In a supportive gesture, her future father-in-law offered to help. King Charles told Meghan he would be honoured to walk her down the aisle.
An independent choice
Her response was polite but firm, and it reportedly took him by surprise. In the biography Queen of Our Times, royal author Robert Hardman details the unexpected exchange that followed.
Hardman writes, “The reply, according to one friend, was not quite what he was expecting: ‘Can we meet halfway?'”
It was a telling moment. This small request was seen as an early sign of her approach to royal life. Hardman noted it showed a confident woman determined to make her own entrance.
Growing distance
Since that day, the couple’s relationship with the working royals has shifted significantly. They soon welcomed two children and eventually relocated to California to pursue an entirely different path.
The physical distance has been matched by a growing emotional divide. Following the release of the Netflix documentary series and Harry’s memoir Spare, tensions with the King and Prince William have remained.
In a recent television interview, the Duke of Sussex noted that some family members might never forgive him for his book. Still, he expressed a clear wish to repair the relationships, stating, “I would love reconciliation with my family.”
Unresolved matters
A central issue remains the ongoing discussion over security arrangements. Harry is currently waiting for a risk assessment regarding his armed police protection when visiting the UK.
Meanwhile, the King recently concluded a short state visit to the United States. His official duties kept him entirely on the East Coast.
Because of these geographical and scheduling constraints, he was unable to travel west to California. The monarch returned home without seeing his son, daughter-in-law, or his grandchildren.
