Trump has signed a new executive order, that can leave many jobless.

Power in Washington is often measured by who writes policy.

According to Reuters, a new executive order signed by Donald Trump could dramatically change who gets to keep doing it.

The president on Wednesday unveiled a sweeping move aimed at senior federal employees, making it easier to dismiss thousands of government officials involved in shaping and implementing policy across federal agencies.

Thousands Could Lose Job Protections

Order affects roughly 8,000 federal workers, many of whom occupy senior positions and earn salaries approaching $200,000 annually.

Under the new rules, affected employees would lose long-standing civil service protections if they are deemed to play a significant role in influencing government policy.

Administration officials argue that the change is necessary to ensure federal agencies faithfully execute the president’s agenda.

Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, defended the move during a briefing with reporters.

“You can have any political views, but if you allow those views to basically interfere with your willingness to actually carry out lawful orders and policy directives with the administration, then this provides a mechanism obviously for people in those agencies to be able to be removed effectively at will,” he said.

Part of a Longer Campaign

Decision marks the latest chapter in Trump’s long-running effort to reshape the federal bureaucracy.

Throughout both presidential terms, Trump has argued that career government officials have sometimes acted as obstacles to policies supported by elected leaders.

Supporters of the order say voters elect presidents to implement specific priorities and that government employees should not be able to frustrate those objectives.

Critics, however, warn that weakening protections for career civil servants could make federal agencies more vulnerable to political pressure.

Far Fewer Than Originally Expected

Earlier proposals suggested that as many as 50,000 government workers could eventually be brought under similar rules.

Current order falls well below that figure, affecting only a fraction of the federal workforce.

Senior administration officials indicated that broader expansion remains possible in the future but said no immediate plans are currently under consideration.

Legal Challenges Already Underway

Federal employee unions and advocacy groups moved quickly to challenge earlier versions of the policy.

Several lawsuits were filed earlier this year, arguing that the administration was attempting to undermine the independence of the civil service.

Court proceedings were temporarily paused while the government finalized the framework that was ultimately signed this week.

Future legal battles now appear likely as opponents seek to block implementation of the order.

High-Stakes Fight Over Government Control

Debate surrounding the measure extends beyond staffing decisions.

Supporters see the order as a tool for increasing accountability inside agencies that wield significant influence over national policy.

Opponents view it as a fundamental shift in how government functions, potentially allowing political leaders to remove experienced officials more easily than ever before.

For Trump, the order represents another step toward remaking a federal workforce he has repeatedly accused of resisting his priorities.

For thousands of senior employees across Washington, it introduces a new level of uncertainty about how secure their positions may remain under future administrations.
