World Cup preparations are already underway across three host nations.
For one international football star, however, getting onto the pitch may first require getting through airport security.
Swiss forward Breel Embolo found himself facing unexpected travel uncertainty after US authorities suddenly placed his previously approved travel authorization under review, prompting fresh attention on the rules facing players and supporters heading to the 2026 World Cup.
Surprise Travel Complication
Switzerland’s national team was preparing for upcoming commitments in North America when officials received an unexpected update regarding Embolo’s travel status.
According to the Swiss Football Association, his authorization to enter the United States had initially been approved before being unexpectedly flagged for further review.
“Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team,” the federation said to BBC.
Association officials later added: “His Esta authorization had been approved until this morning. However, at 10:30am, we were informed that his Esta application had been placed under further review.”
Authorities and team representatives have since been working to resolve the situation, with hopes that the striker will be able to join his teammates shortly.
What Rules Apply for World Cup Visitors?
Case has also drawn attention to the entry requirements facing thousands of players, staff members and supporters planning to attend the tournament.
Many travelers can enter the United States through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, commonly known as ESTA.
Program allows eligible visitors from participating countries to enter the US for tourism purposes without applying for a traditional visa, provided their stay remains within specific limits.
Travel experts note, however, that eligibility can change and travelers are encouraged to check official guidance before making plans.
Alternative Routes Available
Supporters who require traditional visitor visas may face longer waiting periods.
Depending on location and demand, appointment times can range from a matter of days to many months.
FIFA has also introduced a dedicated system for ticket holders.
Known as the FIFA Pass, the program helps certain visitors secure priority scheduling for visa appointments after purchasing tickets through FIFA’s official channels.
Restrictions Remain in Place
Travel policies introduced under President Donald Trump have also created additional complications for citizens of several countries.
Current restrictions affect a number of nations connected to the World Cup, including Iran, Haiti, Ivory Coast and Senegal.
Additional limitations apply to several other countries, creating a more complex travel landscape ahead of the tournament.
Switzerland is not among those affected, making Embolo’s situation particularly unusual.
Cameroon, where the striker was born, is also not included on current restriction lists.
A Tournament Unlike Any Other
World Cup 2026 will be the largest edition in the competition’s history, featuring 48 national teams spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
For most players, preparations involve tactics, training sessions and travel logistics.
For Embolo, at least for the moment, an unexpected paperwork review has become part of the journey as football’s biggest tournament draws closer.
