The president currently has been impeached twice – but can no longer be the case, if their plan is brought to action.

The Trump administration is now backing an effort that would see lawmakers pass a resolution aimed at nullifying both impeachment proceedings brought against the president during his first term in office. While such a move would carry little legal weight, supporters view it as an opportunity to challenge what they have long described as politically motivated actions.

According to Reuters via. a White House official, administration allies have been encouraging lawmakers to move forward with the proposal, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Two Impeachments Still Loom Large

Few political episodes have followed Trump as persistently as the two impeachment cases that dominated parts of his first presidency.

House Democrats first impeached Trump in 2019 on allegations of abuse of power. The Senate later acquitted him, allowing him to remain in office.

A second impeachment followed in January 2021 after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Lawmakers accused Trump of inciting the events that unfolded on January 6, though he again avoided removal from office.

Neither impeachment resulted in a conviction, but both remained central talking points throughout the years that followed.

White House Seeking Symbolic Victory

Administration officials have reportedly signaled strong support for a congressional resolution that would formally reject the impeachment actions.

Sources familiar with the discussions told reporters that the White House has been actively encouraging progress on the matter.

Legal experts note that Congress has no established constitutional mechanism for reversing an impeachment after it has occurred. Because of that, any resolution would be largely symbolic rather than legally binding.

Supporters nevertheless see value in forcing a public reassessment of the proceedings.

Trump Allies Continue Long-Running Argument

For years, Trump and many of his allies have argued that both impeachment efforts were politically driven attempts to damage his presidency.

That message became a recurring theme during his successful 2024 campaign, when he returned to the White House after defeating Democrat Kamala Harris.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson echoed that position when responding to reports about the proposed resolution.

“It’s no surprise that sane individuals are recognizing these sham efforts and are interested in undoing those shameful actions.”

Congress Faces New Debate

Whether the proposal gains meaningful traction remains unclear.

Republican lawmakers control much of Trump’s legislative agenda, but questions remain over how many members would be willing to spend political capital on a measure that would not alter the historical record in any legal sense.

Even so, the effort highlights how battles from Trump’s first presidency continue to shape his second one, with old political grievances once again finding their way back into Washington’s spotlight.
