Global diplomacy requires constant communication.

Yet, when the phone rings in the world’s most powerful offices, a simple birthday greeting can carry heavy political weight. A recent call did just that, TASS reports.

A special ring

A milestone celebration recently brought two controversial figures together. According to the Russian state-owned news agency TASS, a major phone call took place on Sunday between Moscow and Washington.

Putin rang Trump directly. The occasion was the American leader’s 80th birthday.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov shared details of the interaction with reporters. “Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated US President Donald Trump on his 80th birthday over the phone,” he said.

A warm message

The gesture seemingly resonated well at the White House. Ushakov reported that the American president was visibly moved by the outreach and expressed his appreciation during the call.

According to TASS, Trump noted that the Russian leader was actually the first foreign head of state to call him on his special day. The communication went beyond a quick spoken greeting, as a formal note had already been delivered.

“Our president also sent a congratulatory message, in which he noted the exceptional character traits of the honoree that have contributed to his success as a person and as a politician. Donald Trump was touched by these words, expressed his gratitude, and noted that Vladimir Putin was the first foreign leader to call him at the White House,” Ushakov stated.

No wrapped packages

No wrapped packages crossed the ocean. The Kremlin openly admitted it skipped sending any material tokens to mark the milestone.

“No gifts were sent, but, as I have already said, the congratulatory message was very warm, reflecting the nature of the relationship between the two presidents,” Ushakov explained.

The Sunday conversation broke a brief period of silence between the two capitals. TASS reported that this was their first phone call in about six weeks, following an April 29 discussion regarding a ceasefire in Ukraine. Both sides had been focused on separate domestic and international matters since that spring update.
