As preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in the United States, reports suggest President Donald Trump could play a far more prominent role in the trophy presentation than tradition normally allows.
According to Unilad via. sources familiar with discussions between FIFA and the White House, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has signaled that Trump would be free to participate in the post-match celebrations in whatever manner he chooses.
Familiar Scenes Could Return
Such an arrangement would mirror a moment that generated widespread discussion during the Club World Cup earlier this year.
During Chelsea’s trophy celebration, Trump remained beside captain Reece James as the silverware was lifted, creating an unusual scene that quickly spread across social media. Cameras also captured midfielder Cole Palmer appearing visibly confused while standing behind the president during the celebration.
Customary FIFA procedure typically sees dignitaries step aside once medals and trophies have been handed over, leaving players alone to celebrate their achievement. Current indications suggest that approach may not apply this summer.
Sources close to the situation say Trump is expected to remain alongside the victorious team rather than observe from a separate area reserved for officials and guests.
FIFA Open to a Different Approach
FIFA has not publicly objected to the prospect of Trump taking a central role during the ceremony.
Infantino and Trump have maintained a close relationship throughout preparations for several major football events hosted in the United States, including the expanded Club World Cup and this year’s World Cup final.
Reports indicate that discussions between both camps have included the possibility of Trump remaining next to the winning captain during the trophy lift itself, rather than returning to the presentation platform with other dignitaries.
World Cup Final Set for New Jersey
The World Cup final is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium on July 19, bringing the tournament to a close after a month of competition across North America.
Mexico and Canada, which are co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States, are also expected to have official representatives present during the closing ceremony.
White House officials say Trump intends to attend the final, although scheduling considerations could still affect those plans. Earlier in the tournament, he was unable to attend the United States men’s national team’s opening match against Paraguay because of a conflict in his calendar.
