The king has thrown the final blow against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor

Royal ceremonies have always carried a special significance inside the House of Windsor. For Prince Andrew, however, one of the calendar’s most prestigious occasions reportedly served as another reminder of how dramatically his position within the monarchy has changed.

Fresh reports suggest King Charles has taken another step in distancing his younger brother from royal life, adding to a series of measures that have steadily reduced Andrew’s presence in the institution he once represented on the world stage.

Garter Day Without Andrew

Monday’s Garter Day celebrations marked the first time in nearly two decades that Andrew was entirely absent from the event following his removal from the Order of the Garter.

Although he had already been excluded from public-facing royal duties in recent years, private elements of the ceremony had previously remained available to him. That situation changed after King Charles stripped Andrew of his remaining royal titles and removed him from the prestigious order.

Andrew’s heraldic banner was subsequently taken down from St George’s Chapel, reinforcing his separation from one of Britain’s oldest and most exclusive royal institutions.

Ceremonial Robes Reportedly Reassigned

According to Express, Charles has now requested that Andrew return his ceremonial Garter robes as well.

The distinctive blue velvet garments, traditionally worn by members of the order during major ceremonies, have reportedly been reassigned to another knight.

Such a move would carry considerable symbolic weight given Andrew’s long association with the event. Royal observers note that Garter Day remained one of the few occasions that connected him to a status he retained even after stepping back from frontline royal duties.

Sources Describe Difficult Weekend

Reports citing sources close to the situation suggest the latest developments have been particularly painful for the Duke of York.

One source told the Daily Express:

“He’s become used to watching his family celebrate Trooping without him, but Garter Day will be a really tough day for him.”

Trooping the Colour took place only days earlier, while Royal Ascot is also expected to bring much of the Royal Family together this week.

Another source described Andrew’s emotional state in stark terms:

“He’s feeling more isolated than ever; he’s completely alone.”

Long Connection to the Order

Andrew was appointed to the Order of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006, making the ceremony one of the most significant royal traditions in his calendar.

For years, participation in the event served as a visible reminder of his standing within the monarchy. Recent decisions by King Charles have effectively brought that chapter to an end, further reducing Andrew’s remaining links to official royal life.

With several major royal gatherings taking place over the coming weeks, attention is likely to remain on how the monarchy continues to redefine Andrew’s role — or lack of one — within the institution.
