High-stakes political summits are usually staged to perfection.

Yet, behind the official photographs, the real action often happens when leaders think nobody is listening. According to The Mirror, a brief moment of relaxed security can expose the true calculations driving global politics.

Whispers in France

French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accidentally revealed their private plans during a walk at the G7 summit. The two men were caught speaking near an open microphone on the grounds of the Hotel Royal in Evian-les-Bains.

The Mirror reported that Macron brought up a tough meeting he had with US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“Yesterday, we had a difficult discussion in front of the camera,” Macron told Zelensky during their morning walk.

Macron then urged the Ukrainian leader to extend his stay at the summit. Zelensky declined because he had scheduled meetings with European Union leaders in Brussels the very next day.

Secret summit plans

The conversation quickly turned to the American president. Macron asked Zelensky if he had a private meeting set up with the US leader.

“With President Trump?” Zelensky asked in response.

The two leaders whispered quietly for about 20 seconds before Macron offered to step in.

“OK, I will arrange that,” Macron said according to the audio recording.

Pressure on Moscow

After the brief chat, official talks moved quickly. The formal session with Zelensky wrapped up in just 75 minutes. The Ukrainian leader praised the group for showing a united front against Moscow.

“The entire ‘Seven’ supports Ukraine unanimously today,” Zelensky said after the meeting. He added that the group discussed getting more Patriot missiles to protect Ukrainian cities from air strikes.

The leaders are pushing for stronger action behind closed doors. The Associated Press reported that G7 leaders, including Trump, agreed to increase economic pressure on Russia by targeting its oil and gas sectors.

The shift is critical for Kyiv. Since Trump reduced US financial aid, France and other European nations have become Ukraine’s primary backers.

Other global crises

Meanwhile, the Swiss foreign ministry announced that the US and Iran will sign a ceasefire deal on Friday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Still, roadblocks remain. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that Israeli strikes have killed 3,826 people since March 2, threatening Middle East peace efforts.
