Italian Elderly Man Elected Mayor Due to Age Quota

A 73-year-old Italian man has been elected mayor of Zerba, the smallest commune in Emilia-Romagna, solely due to his advanced age.

According to reports from La Repubblica, the commune experienced a rare tie of 28 votes each in the second round of elections, leading to two subsequent draws within two weeks.

Eventually, Giovanni Razzari emerged as the new mayor, adhering to legal provisions where the elder candidate is automatically chosen in case of a tie, while the younger candidate assumes an opposition role.

Giovanni Razzari expressed discontent with the electoral law that determined his victory based on age alone.

“It’s an absurd rule. Public offices should not be awarded based on age criteria. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again,” remarked Razzari upon assuming office.

Despite his reservations about the method of his election, he acknowledged his win as bittersweet, given the division it has caused within the commune.

He emphasized his immediate priority to mend these divisions and unify the community.
