When global tensions rise, political leaders often look for harsh financial tools to stop aggressive nations in their tracks.
Slapping penalties on an adversary is standard practice during wartime, but choking off the hidden cash lines that keep a war machine running is much harder.
Now, a prominent lawmaker in Washington wants to shut down those remaining lifelines completely.
Cracking down hard
United States Senator Rick Scott is urging Congress to pass a sweeping new sanctions bill. The goal is simple: cripple Moscow’s war economy by targeting any foreign nation that keeps buying Russian resources.
Speaking to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and cited by United24Media, the Florida Republican pulled no punches.
“Putin’s a thug. It’s despicable what he’s done to the Ukrainian people and how many women, children, and grandmothers Putin has killed. It’s important for us to stand for freedom,” Scott told RFE/RL.
He insisted that nations aiding the invasion must pay a price. “If you support what Russia is doing, then you should be sanctioned. There’s no question about it,” he added.
Targeting key allies
The bipartisan bill, known as the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026, has already gathered over sixty co-sponsors in the Senate. It includes heavy tariffs on Russian imports and steep penalties for major global buyers of Russian energy.
Scott warned that autocratic governments in Beijing, Tehran, and Pyongyang are coordinating closely to challenge Western democracies.
“They hate our way of life… They’re going to work together to do it, and they have worked together to do it,” Scott stated.
According to Scott, the Kremlin completely misjudged Western leadership and “underestimated Trump’s commitment to freedom around the world.”
Lessons from battle
Beyond economic measures, the senator voiced strong support for military assistance to Kyiv after discussing supply chains with White House officials.
“When I talk to the White House, they’re absolutely committed to Ukraine, and I’m very comfortable that they’re going to provide Ukraine the weapons they need when they need them,” Scott told RFE/RL.
He also praised Ukrainian forces for using cheap, specialized drone technology to destroy massive amounts of Russian equipment on small budgets.
Reflecting on the battlefield dynamics, Scott declared that “what the Ukrainians have done is show that corrupt dictatorships fail and freedom prevails.”
