AI data centers consumed 4.5 trillion liters of water in 2025

Every time someone generates an image, asks a chatbot a question, or streams video online, invisible digital machinery hums into action behind the scenes.

The digital world feels weightless. Yet its physical footprint grows heavier every single day. Behind our sleek screens, massive server facilities are quietly consuming vital natural resources, reports DR News.

Thirsty server farms

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence relies on giant server facilities that run constantly. These facilities produce intense heat. Keeping this machinery from overheating requires immense amounts of fresh water.

A UN University report revealed that electricity generation for data centers accounted for 4.5 trillion liters of water in 2025. That is a staggering sum. In fact, that amount could fill 1.8 million Olympic swimming pools or supply basic domestic water to 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa for an entire year.

Many of these centers operate in water-stressed regions like Bengaluru, Chile, and the United States. To keep costs low, operators rely on evaporative cooling that pumps up local groundwater and lets it evaporate.

Closed-loop systems recycle water instead of wasting it, but tech companies often resist paying higher setup costs. Raghavendra Selvan, an assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen, pointed out, “They are more expensive to set up, and not all data centers are willing to use them. Therefore, we should work to ensure that all new data centers that are built use these closed-loop cooling systems.”

Shifting the blame

Measuring the true environmental damage of computing infrastructure remains extremely difficult. Private tech firms rarely publish full details about their server setups or resource consumption.

Corporate transparency is remarkably low. As a result, experts believe official figures capture only a fraction of the actual damage. Selvan warned, “I would argue that the overall environmental impact is currently drastically underestimated.”

Report lead researcher Kaveh Madani stressed that the goal is not to destroy AI, describing technology as “a transformation that improves the lives of billions of people around the world.” Rather, he explained, “It’s a call to use it responsibly and proactively address unintended consequences to make it sustainable and fair.”

Some commentators argue that consumers should type shorter prompts to save energy, but researchers reject that idea. Placing the burden back on tech giants, Selvan noted, “But I disagree. The main responsibility still lies with the companies that develop these enormous tools.”
