The Trump administration tried to make a sweeping election overhaul in California before the election in November
Imagine if a person tried to change the rules after they had already been agreed upon.
That would cause intense friction and arguments.
This is the equivalent of what the Trump administration is doing with the voting process all over the country. But they were just handed a massive defeat in court.
Bending the rules
The federal court in Massachusetts has stepped in to block new restrictions on mail-in ballots across the United States. The decision halts a White House directive.
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani expanded an earlier ruling on Tuesday, issuing a nationwide injunction that stops the Postal Service from enforcing the president’s March order.
The order required states to submit voter citizenship lists 60 days before the November 3 midterms. Otherwise, residents could not receive mail ballots.
A larger agenda
In her 27-page opinion, Talwani warned that shifting rules right before an election destroys public trust. She wrote that the directive is “causing confusion” and “threatening both increasing chaos and an erosion of trust in our democracy.”
The judge stresses the timing is the key factor for this decision. “That it is now less than 90 days before the November 3, 2026 midterm elections underscores the critical need for an injunction to prevent Defendants from changing election rules on the eve of the election.”
These proposed changes are part of a larger agenda by the Trump administration to attempt to restrict American voting rights regarding mail-in ballots. The administration has directed the U.S. Postal Service to enact these restrictions, but has been blocked by multiple federal judges.
A national emergency
The driving force behind the agenda is President Trump himself. This is just the latest instance of the President questioning the validity of mail-in voting while pushing false claims about him losing the presidential election to Joe Biden in 2020.
On Tuesday, Trump did not rule out the possibility of declaring a national emergency to take control of the midterms if Congress does not vote for stricter voter ID laws.
This would be an unprecedented move that would go against the Constitution and could possibly send the country into unknown territory.
