Trump doubles down on putting his name on America despite fresh legal battles.
Donald Trump’s efforts to leave a visible mark on Washington have attracted renewed attention following another attempt to attach the president’s name to one of the capital’s best-known cultural institutions.
CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins examined the expanding collection of projects and public assets linked to Trump’s name after the Kennedy Center board approved new signage crediting him with the building’s restoration and renovation.
The decision comes despite an earlier federal court order requiring Trump’s name to be removed from the Kennedy Center’s exterior.
Trump’s handpicked Kennedy Center board has approved wording that would appear beneath the institution’s existing name rather than formally replacing it.
Under the resolution, the facade would carry the words: “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”
Whether that approach complies with the previous court ruling remains unresolved and could ultimately produce another legal fight.
The dispute prompted Collins to look beyond the Kennedy Center and examine how frequently Trump’s name has appeared on government-related projects and proposals during his second term.
“The president‘s focus has not just been on the Kennedy Center in terms of his broader push to remake Washington. It‘s also his penchant for branding everything in his name,” Collins said according to The Daily Beast.
She then pointed to several examples, including gold coins, passports, national park passes, a proposed renaming of Palm Beach International Airport, a Justice Department banner and a new class of battleships.
“There are many things, not just in Washington, but all across the nation now bearing the Trump name,” Collins said.
More projects could carry Trump name
Other examples were not included in Collins’ rundown.
Trump’s name has also been placed on the U.S. Institute of Peace, while reports have suggested that the president intends to name the planned White House ballroom after himself.
Legal questions surrounding that construction project could complicate those ambitions.
Trump has separately expressed interest in having the Washington Commanders’ proposed new stadium carry his name, further extending the branding effort beyond federal buildings and government materials.
The Kennedy Center dispute, however, has become particularly notable because Trump’s name has already been removed once following court intervention.
‘Very unique behavior’
Collins discussed the latest development with New York Times White House correspondent Shawn McCreesh, who argued that seemingly minor disputes can reveal something broader about the political environment surrounding the president.
“There‘s, you know, these are technically small things that don‘t affect tens of millions of people or global trade. It‘s not an issue of war and peace. And yet the smallness of these incidents have a way of magnifying how strange the behavior of the royal court around Trump is,” McCreesh said.
Attention then turned specifically to the board’s willingness to revisit the Kennedy Center signage after the previous legal defeat.
“I think it‘s very strange that a board of people who are loyal to him got together today and said, no, we are going to scrape your name on the wall after we‘ve been told to take it off. That‘s very unique behavior,” McCreesh said.
Collins offered a brief response to his characterization.
“‘Unique’ is a word for it,” she said.
