A sudden swap
A recent decision to swap planes mid-trip has triggered sharp debate inside American national security circles. The unexpected travel change occurred as President Donald Trump prepared to depart a NATO summit in Turkey.
Foreign officials had issued urgent warnings regarding alleged Iranian assassination plots targeting the president. However, intelligence analysts in Washington quickly questioned the validity of those alerts, according to a Washington Post report cited by The Jerusalem Post.
In particular, CIA analysts who examined the information found it unconvincing and lacking substance. One official noted that the threats were “Israeli-derived, not US-generated, and viewed as low confidence.”
Some American officials suspected that the warning was designed to manipulate US foreign policy. One source claimed the alert “fit a broader pattern of Israeli intelligence reporting that some officials see as designed as much to shape presidential decision-making as to inform it.”
Taking no chances
Despite deep skepticism within intelligence agencies, security teams refused to take any chances with the president’s physical safety. The US Secret Service took the warnings seriously and scrambled to conceal his actual travel schedule.
Past security scares clearly influenced the quick decision on the tarmac. An official told The Washington Post that “The Secret Service has had three near misses with this president, so they’re not taking any chances,” adding that “They did what they had to do.”
Trump addressed the sudden plane switch when questioned by reporters on Tuesday. The president made it clear that he simply follows instructions when his security detail raises concerns.
“They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane, for safety, but they wanted me to do it, so I do it. I do what they say,” Trump stated.
