An Ohio Republican voter called on Donald Trump to resign while withdrawing his support for Rep. Max Miller following recent domestic abuse allegations against the congressman.
Recent turmoil within the Republican Party has sparked deep frustration among conservative voters in Ohio.
Local resident Rich Beeby, a registered Republican from Strongsville, offered a sharp assessment of the party’s trajectory when speaking with reporters on Tuesday.
Asked what direct message he would pass along to Donald Trump right now, Beeby did not hold back, according to HuffPost.
His direct response was a single word: “Resign.” He went on to warn that the president is “destroying the country.”
Withdrawing Support
Beeby also confirmed that he plans to withdraw his support for Representative Max Miller in the upcoming midterm elections.
He is not the only local conservative taking a hard second look at his ballot options following recent events.
Another constituent, Katie Heinz, confirmed that she is reconsidering her past support for Miller.
Allegations of family abuse surrounding the lawmaker have made it difficult for her to stand by him.
She emphasized that personal controversies distract from legislative work, ultimately harming the interests of voters, HuffPost reports.
Scandals mount
According to HuffPost, the shifting sentiment comes as Miller faces significant legal and personal troubles.
The claims originate from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, who alleges that he subjected both her and their two-year-old daughter to physical and emotional abuse.
In a recent legal filing, Moreno further accuses him of unlawfully sharing an inappropriate photograph of their daughter.
The situation has intensified as the House Ethics Committee launched an official investigation into the accusations against him.
Miller continues to deny all allegations against him. However, voters like Heinz worry that ongoing personal battles prevent elected officials from delivering results, making it nearly impossible to focus on effective governance when personal lives derail daily duties.
A Race at Risk
The controversy is now threatening to turn into a serious electoral problem for Republicans.
According to Axios, Donald Trump personally warned Miller that his reelection bid was looking difficult, although Miller told the president that he intended to remain in the race.
The Ohio Republican is seeking another term in the 7th Congressional District, where the increasingly competitive race could give Democrats an opportunity to capture a seat Republicans had expected to hold.
