It is film festival season around the world right now.
From Venice to Brussels and Toronto, there are plenty of films being shown right now hoping for success when they eventually hit the theaters or streaming services.
But one surprise documentary has upended the film world in Telluride, Colorado. It is a peculiar one. A three-hour documentary by a satirist.
His subject? A disgraced former businesswoman.
‘You Can See Everything’
When patrons took their seats in the Werner Herzog Theater at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, they had no idea what they were about to see. The film was top secret and apparently, it did not disappoint.
The film is called ‘You Can See Everything’ and is directed by Lance Oppenheim and Canadian surrealist comedian Nathan Fielder who also start in the film alongside the subject.
The documentary centers around Elizabeth Holmes, the felon and founder of the infamous healthcare company Theranos, which turned out to be a scam.
According to Vanity Fair, the documentary is almost three hours long and follows Holmes in the weeks before she has to begin her 11-year prison sentence.
Holmes’ image comes into question
Elizabeth Holmes’ life has been chronicled multiple times in popular podcasts, documentaries, and even Hollywood productions.
For those who do not know the story of Elizabeth Holmes, she founded the company Theranos, which touted it would revolutionize the healthcare industry by performing blood tests instantly with only one drop of blood via the automated device she had created.
It all turned out to be a scam, but not before raising US$700 million from investors and being hailed as the next Steve Jobs. The company also produced numerous fake tests for average people that would ultimately give them a major health scare.
Fielder and Holmes
Nathan Fielder is known for his surreal documentaries exploring the line between comedy and reality. It seems as though he did find that line with Holmes during the making of this documentary.
“I really am struggling to this day to understand exactly what I experienced,” Fielder said. “And one of the things I’m genuinely excited about is for this movie to come out and for people to help me understand what I experienced. Truly, to this day, I don’t quite know what I went through.”
The first reviews of the documentary are promising. RogerEbert.com writes the film is “nothing you’ve ever seen,” while IndieWire calls the documentary “Boundary-Pushing and Absurd.”

So why is Elizabeth Holmes still such a popular person and topic that it warrants a new three-hour documentary? Other than being a notorious con woman, she is also an enigma who spent years defrauding people while curating a persona that would resemble the likes of Steve Jobs and the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.
