A former head of Mi6 is sounding the alarm in the UK of overreliance on China.
A former British spy chief has issued a stark warning about national energy security.
Former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove said China could hold the country to ransom by cutting off crucial technology and materials.
Warning for the parliament
He explained that growing reliance on Chinese supplies poses a direct threat to the power grid. According to Sir Richard, China now controls key mineral markets. Without these materials, domestic energy infrastructure cannot be built.
“Peacetime dependencies give China strategic leverage, and in a crisis it gives them weapons of mass disruption which could literally bring this country to a complete standstill,” Dearlove warned, according to the Daily Mail.
He added that required materials sit with “the very country which the Director General of MI5 has identified as the most serious threat to Britain’s national security.”
A dangerous dependence
The warning follows talks between Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Downing Street confirmed both leaders agreed to build a long-term partnership, but security experts remain deeply concerned.
Sir Richard warned that the UK had acted complacently while shutting down its industrial base. By ceasing to manufacture, the nation exposed its power grid to strategic adversaries.
“Our foreign policy is therefore fettered and could even be held to ransom,” Sir Richard cautioned.
Political fallout
Opposition figures quickly seized on the intelligence warning. Shadow Home Office Minister Alicia Kearns accused the government of “making our country less resilient and less safe” through Chinese dependency.
“Ministers should be taking measures to protect the grid and the British people’s access to energy,” she said.
Members of Parliament across parties agree the threat requires urgent attention. Labour MP Luke Akehurst said the warning must be taken “extremely seriously.”
