Donald Trump took to social media on Monday to air his grievances about the current conflict involving Iran. He used his Truth Social platform to issue a stark financial warning.
According to Onet News, the president believes the United States is carrying an unfair financial burden. He expects direct compensation.
“Countries that have not helped us in any way should and will return the money to the United States when this FRAUDULENT war is over,” Trump wrote.
He did not name any specific nations in his post. Onet News noted that he also left out exactly what financial contributions he expects these countries to refund.
Securing the waters
The social media rant touched on a critical chokepoint for global shipping. Trump brought up the ongoing efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to international trade.
He suggested American forces are doing the heavy lifting in the region to benefit foreign powers rather than American interests.
“We’ve been doing this for generations!” Trump added on his platform.
The waterway is essential for the global oil supply chain. The US military has long maintained a presence there to prevent shipping disruptions.
A sudden shift
Just hours later, the tone of his online messaging took a noticeable turn. In a separate post, Trump hinted at a potential diplomatic breakthrough.
He painted a picture of an Iranian government desperate for a way out of the current crisis.
“The failing state of Iran is eager to reach an agreement, and as soon as possible. I will decide whether the United States decides to engage in talks, and we are open to that possibility,” he posted.
Changing his tune
This sudden openness to negotiation marks a massive pivot from his established track record.
For a long time, Trump has argued that officials in Tehran simply cannot be trusted. He previously maintained that he had zero interest in making deals with them.
