A trip to the beach is usually the ultimate escape. Early risers rush to claim a prime spot on the sand before crowds arrive. But sometimes, a simple quest to relax takes a tragic turn.
Law enforcement in Greece launched a probe into a fatal incident involving a senior citizen. The tragedy unfolded Sunday along the Athenian riviera, according to The Guardian.
The older victim and his wife arrived at the Vouliagmeni bathing area shortly before 10 a.m. They just wanted to find a place to sit.
The couple quickly realised seating was extremely limited. Before long, the elderly man engaged in an intense verbal dispute over a single available sunbed.
A fatal dispute
Officials noted the second beachgoer was a 76-year-old man who did not know the victim. Their shouting match did not stay peaceful.
The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical brawl on the sand. As the seniors clashed, bystanders reportedly jumped into the chaos.
The country’s state broadcaster, ERT, reported, “It seems that people who were with [the assailant] also participated.”
Amid the shouting, the older victim suffered a sudden medical emergency. First responders suspect he went into cardiac arrest while the wild scene unfolded.
Shocking the community
Paramedics arrived to find the man in terrible shape. ERT stated, “The 82-year-old was seriously injured, and needed to be transferred by ambulance to Asklepieion hospital in Voula.”
Sadly, the medical team could not save him. ERT added, “Despite the efforts of doctors, at about 11am the elderly man succumbed to his wounds.”
Police took the 76-year-old into custody right on the sand. A 21-year-old female companion and the manager of the local facility also faced questioning after being hauled in.
Tensions boiling over
One local source told The Guardian that arguments there rarely turn into physical violence. They called the deadly brawl entirely unprecedented.
“The incident is under investigation,” the source said. “In Greece disagreement is expressed vocally, with a lot of screaming and shouting, not in fistfights like this, especially between two elderly men. I think that’s why it is so shocking.”
According to the newspaper, a steep rise in daily expenses has driven up stress levels across the nation. Locals are also losing patience with pricey private rentals taking over public coastal spaces.
Legal next steps are already in motion. A judge will soon question everyone connected to the scuffle, as authorities confirmed “all those” people face an imminent court appearance.
