Trump delivers bizarre Biden punchline and receives almost nothing in return.
Political rallies are usually friendly territory for Donald Trump, where jokes about opponents can generate almost as much noise as promises about policy.
Thursday’s stop in Texas provided a rather different soundtrack for one particular punchline.
Trump visited a Peterbilt truck manufacturing facility in Denton as part of his push ahead of the November midterm elections, delivering remarks that ranged across manufacturing, trade and Republican candidates. The White House confirms that Trump participated in the Texas site visit on October 1.
Former President Joe Biden eventually entered the conversation — courtesy of some nearby stairs.
Trump used the stage setup to resurrect one of his familiar attacks on his predecessor, only for the joke to receive a noticeably subdued response from the audience.
Trump discovers several ways off the stage
Trump has repeatedly mocked Biden over moments involving stairs, including footage that showed the former president stumbling or appearing to need help navigating his surroundings.
Standing before the crowd in Denton, Trump decided to demonstrate that he faced no such navigational difficulties.
“I don’t have that problem, you see. You see how many stairs there are?” Trump said.
The audience briefly responded as Trump gestured toward different routes around the stage.
“I can go ramp; I can go stair; I can go another stair over there,” he continued.
Then came the Biden punchline.
“He could never find the stair!”
Video from the event shows Trump delivering the line before continuing his remarks without a significant audible reaction from the crowd. Contemporary coverage of the appearance similarly noted the quiet response after the joke.
Biden remains one of Trump’s favorite targets
Leaving office has not removed Biden from Trump’s speeches.
Trump has regularly invoked his predecessor while discussing the economy, immigration, foreign policy and America’s international reputation. Physical mishaps and Biden’s age have also been recurring material in Trump’s political performances.
Thursday was no exception.
After his stairs remark failed to generate much noise, Trump immediately moved toward a broader argument about how the United States was perceived during Biden’s presidency.
“We were being laughed at all over the world,” Trump said.
“They don’t laugh at us anymore.”
Trump offered no evidence during that portion of the speech that would establish such a sweeping change in international attitudes, making the statement a political claim rather than a measurable conclusion.
Texas trip had a bigger political purpose
Stairs were hardly the reason Trump travelled to Denton.
His appearance formed part of a wider campaign push ahead of the midterms, with the president using the visit to promote Republican candidates and his economic agenda.
Trump’s October 1 schedule included the hour-long Texas site visit as well as meetings with reporters during the trip, according to the White House.
Manufacturing offered Trump a natural backdrop for familiar arguments about tariffs, domestic production and his broader “America First” economic policies.
Republican figures including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Rep. Brandon Gill and Senate candidate Ken Paxton were among the political names connected to the event.
Trump’s appearance also came during a concentrated campaign swing through Republican-friendly territory as the president seeks to mobilize supporters before November.
