Disney+ announces ambitious new Marvel series: Here’s what to know about ‘Zodiac’
Marvel Television

Marvel unveiled a brand-new series at New York Comic Con with strong ties to one of its more overlooked corners of the universe.

Marvel’s television universe has experienced a relatively quiet period, leaving viewers wondering which familiar characters and organizations might return to Disney+.

Following the reported cancellations of Wonder Man and a planned continuation of Daredevil: Born Again, the studio has offered few clues about its next major live-action projects.

That silence finally ended during New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 8, when Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum appeared at the Javits Center with news about the franchise’s future.

Marvel has officially announced Zodiac, a new live-action espionage thriller scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2028.

And judging by the first clues, the series could have particularly interesting implications for one of Marvel’s most recognizable organizations.

A familiar symbol raises questions

Marvel revealed surprisingly little about its latest production during the presentation.

Rather than introducing actors or showing footage, the studio unveiled a metallic black-and-white logo featuring the title Zodiac.

However, the design contained a detail that immediately attracted attention.

According to CBR, Winderbaum encouraged viewers to examine the artwork carefully, explaining that there was “a lot hidden in that logo” for people familiar with Marvel’s comic books.

It didn’t take long for fans to identify something intriguing.

Hidden inside the letter A was what appeared to be the unmistakable eagle emblem associated with S.H.I.E.L.D., the intelligence organization previously led by Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The discovery has fueled speculation that the upcoming thriller could bring the organization back into the spotlight.

Clark Gregg, who portrayed Phil Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., added to the excitement by sharing the announcement on Instagram.

His involvement in the project, however, has not been confirmed.

Marvel’s criminal organization has an interesting history

The name Zodiac might sound like something connected to astrology, but Marvel’s comic-book readers know it has a considerably more sinister meaning.

Within the comics, Zodiac is a criminal organization whose members adopt identities inspired by the twelve signs of the zodiac.

The group has repeatedly clashed with S.H.I.E.L.D., making the symbol hidden in the promotional artwork particularly noteworthy.

Cornelius van Lunt, a wealthy businessman operating under the alias Taurus, has frequently served as the organization’s leader.

Another important character is Scorpio, whose identity introduces a potentially fascinating family connection.

Several comic-book storylines identify Scorpio as Jacob Fury, the younger brother of Nick Fury.

That relationship has naturally sparked speculation about whether Samuel L. Jackson could reprise his famous role in the upcoming Disney+ production.

Marvel has made no announcement about Jackson’s participation, and the connection remains purely speculative.

Production is heading to London

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, Marvel is keeping most of the project’s details confidential.

The studio has not revealed the cast, director or specific storyline.

Winderbaum did, however, provide some information about the production schedule.

According to Up Your Geek, casting is expected to begin “in the next few weeks,” suggesting that the studio is preparing to move forward with the project.

Filming is currently scheduled to begin in London during spring 2027.

That timetable would give the production approximately a year or more before its planned Disney+ release in 2028.

Whether the series will introduce entirely new characters or bring back familiar faces from previous Marvel productions remains unknown.
