The projected flip hands Hakeem Jeffries the speaker’s gavel and sets up an immediate clash with the Trump White House.

A stunning night for American politics just keeps getting wilder.

The major news networks have already called the House majority.

It is a great success for the Democrats and an unmitigated disaster for the GOP.

Democrats get majority

Democrats are projected to win the majority in the House of Representatives, according to reports from CNN and NBC.

It is their first takeover of the lower chamber since early 2023. With the speaker’s gavel in hand, Democratic leaders will soon control which bills reach the floor and which investigations move forward.

That shift puts the White House directly in the crosshairs. Lawmakers have already signaled plans for aggressive oversight hearings into Donald Trump and key Cabinet officials, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth singled out as an early target.

Deep frustration from voters

Deep frustration over grocery bills and fuel spikes tied to the war in Iran drove the backlash, despite the president begging supporters to rally behind his candidates.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, poised to make history as the first Black speaker of the House, built the winning campaign on affordability. He carried that fight to Texas last week.

“Everything has become more expensive here in America because of Donald Trump’s failed and toxic policies,” Jeffries said, according to HuffPost.

New sheriffs in town

Republicans now face their own internal chaos. Mike Johnson hopes to remain the party leader in the minority, but conservative colleagues Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise may mount a challenge before votes in January.

Passing new laws in this split capital will demand compromise. Because the president still holds the White House, any major measure must win cross-party support to survive.

Immigration could offer one rare opening for a deal. Speaking during a stop in Texas, Jeffries kept the door open for bipartisan talks on border policy.

“As House Democrats, we’re committed to getting the situation turned around. We know we have a broken immigration system. We know it needs to be fixed in a comprehensive and bipartisan way,” Jeffries said.

‘Lawyer up’

After the Democrats secured the majority, Robert Garcia, the incoming oversight chairman released a statement where he wrote a simple two-word message to the Republican Party and its leaders

“Laywer up.”

That ice-cold statement will surely send chills down the spines of Republicans like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Republican Speaker Mike Johnson.
