The fear of another winter with soaring energy prices has led Hungary to increase its purchase of Russian gas.

Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss energy matters, including gas and nuclear fuel for the country.

David Pressman, the U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, expressed concerns about Hungary’s relationship with Russia. He stated that Putin’s illegal and unprovoked war against Ukraine violates international norms and poses a threat to the U.S. and its allies, including Hungary.

Today, Politico.eu reported that Gazprom is already pumping extra gas to Hungary to prevent an energy crisis with skyrocketing gas prices like last year.

Gazprom’s director, Alexey Miller, said they are ready to send more gas to Hungary in the coming winter.

In Germany, Steffen Kotre, the energy policy spokesperson for the right-wing party AfD, talks about resuming gas supplies via Nord Stream.

AfD is currently Germany’s second-largest party in the polls and has gained ground in recent state elections in Bayern and Hessen.
