After renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, Trumps aim is now set on another body of water.

3 renamings so far

The Gulf of Mexico is now Gulf of America. The Alaskan peak, Denali, is now Mount McKinley. Fort Liberty is now Fort Bragg. Donald Trump is not the first president to rename things, but he has certainly been busy doing it during the first 100 days of his second term.

New renaming on the way

According to AP, next week, POTUS will visit Saudi Arabia, and he is planning on making a special announcement: In the future, the U.S. will refer to the Persion Gulf as the Arabian Gulf or Gulf of Arabia, according to U.S. officials.

Controversial suggestion

The Persian Gulf is the name of a body of water of the southern coast of Iran. Arab nations have pushed for a name change while Iran has maintained its historic connection to the gulf (Persia is the historic name of one of the ethnic groups in Iran).

Already used in many Middle Eastern countries

The Persian Gulf has been known by its name since the 16th century, but many countries in the Middle East use the term Gulf of Arabia or Arabian Gulf instead.

Iran vs. Google in 2012

In 2012, the Iranian government threatened Google with legal action, because the company did not lbel the body of water on all of its maps. In the U.S., the body of water is refered to as Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf) on Google Maps. In Apple Maps, it’s only named Persian Gulf

Can only affect official U.S.

If Donald Trump follows through on his reported name change, it will only affect how the official U.S. refers to the body of water. He can’t dictate what it’s called in the rest of the world.
