Russian independent media outlet Mediazona, in partnership with the BBC Russian service, has confirmed the identities of 111,387 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.

The data was updated to include deaths recorded through June 6, 2025.

Since their last update at the end of May, an additional 1,762 deaths have been confirmed.

The investigators emphasize that their confirmed count likely underestimates the true number of Russian fatalities. Their figures are based solely on publicly available information including obituaries, social media posts by relatives, local media reports, memorial events, and statements from regional authorities.

Every casualty entry is manually verified by volunteers to ensure accuracy and avoid duplicate entries.

The full database was first made public in February 2025.

Heavy Losses Across All Groups

According to Mediazona and the BBC Russian service, the confirmed dead include:

  • 28,200 volunteers
  • 17,400 recruited prisoners
  • Nearly 12,300 mobilized soldiers
  • Over 5,100 officers

According to Western intelligence, these estimates have surpassed 1 million when including the wounded, captured, missing, and killed.

While Russia has made some territorial gains in eastern Ukraine and parts of Kursk Oblast in recent months, these advances have come at a cost in both manpower and equipment.

Despite its continued offensives, Russia remains secretive about its official casualty figures.

However, a rare admission came in December, when a Defense Ministry official revealed that authorities had received 48,000 requests from families seeking help identifying missing soldiers.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported that more than 100,000 Russian families have reached out to their initiative for information on missing soldiers.
